Badminton Writers award for Gail


Gail Emms was the senior award winner at the 27th Badminton Writers' Association annual awards lunch at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens today.The award was for her achievements in the sport, including 2004 Olympic silver medal and the 2006 world and Commonwealth titles with Nathan Robertson and the European women's doubles title with Donna Kellogg. Gail, who received her award of a framed photograph of her last Beijing winning moment from BWA chairman William Kings, is now BADMINTON England's Ambassador as well as a mentor to some of England's rising doubles stars like Gabby White and Jenny Wallwork, who were quarter-finalists in Birmingham this week at the Yonex All England Championships.The BWA/Dorothy Hinchcliff Young Player of the Year Award went to Edinburgh's Martin Campbell, who won the award for Scotland for the first time.Martin won the Commonwealth Youth Games bronze medal in singles and also won the Bank of Scotland Under 19 singles and doubles titles this season. He edged out England's Panuga Riou and Welsh prospect Jamie van Hooijdonk.The teenager is away on tournament duty this weekend so BADMINTONscotland President Leon Douglas received the award on his behalf from Yonex UK Managing Director Paul Jepson. Yonex are the sponsors of the award.The BWA Special Award went to BWF Certificated Referee Keith Hawthorne for his services to the sport. Keith retired from international refereeing last year but is still active as one of the refereeing team at the Yonex All England Championships in Birmingham's National Indoor Arena.Nearly 100 guests attended the lunch, including BWF President Dr Kang and Badminton Europe President and former All England champion Tom Bacher.
